East Meets West

EAST MEETS WEST

PARIS BAR, INTERIOR, NIGHT
CHARLOTTE, and SOPHIE sit at a table as BILLIE-JEAN enters through the bar door, dragging an over sized piece of luggage and approaches CHARLOTTE.
BILLIE-JEAN
Are you smoking? I hope your choking! On your own words, you perverted smoking wench whore.
CHARLOTTE
Oh my God, BILLIE-JEAN!!! How did you...
BILLIE-JEAN
Find your cheating ass? What is she, 18?
CHARLOTTE
Can we not do this somewhere else?
BILLIE-JEAN
No, we're going to do this right here. I flew half-way around the world, sat next to afro-permed women who smelled like crotch, was half-molested by a German speaking midget on the Metro, and arrived at this bar to surprise you.... only to see you with this French speaking skank.
CHARLOTTE
Oh, well, SOPHIE is just a friend Billie. (pause) Oh My God, Billie! You're really here! It's such a surprise!
(to SOPHIE)
Je suis desole, mon amie a suprise moi.
BILLIE-JEAN
WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY TO HER?
CHARLOTTE
I just said that you surprised me.
BILLIE-JEAN
Speak English dammit, you're a fucking American. Traitor. Just because you spent the last four months abroad, and can speak Code Napoleon doesn't mean I'm a fucking idiot.
(to SOPHIE)
Don't give me that helpless I'm French look, you know what I'm saying bitch.
SOPHIE
(to Charlotte)
Je dois y aller. (I Should go)
BILLIE-JEAN
(mocking with un-unintelligible words)
...to you too you harlot!
CHARLOTTE
Billie, Sophie was just saying she was leaving.
BILLIE-JEAN
Au revoir bitch.
SOPHIE faire de bisous (double kiss on the cheeks of Charlotte) then exits.
BILLIE-JEAN (CONT.)
Holy fucking shit, she did not just try to kiss you in front of me.
CHARLOTTE
STOP THIS BILLIE-JEAN! You know it's how everyone says goodbye here.
BILLIE-JEAN
You fucked her, didn't you?
CHARLOTTE
No, No. What? Billie, me and Soph are just friends. Can we forget about all this, how in the world did you find time off work to fly over?
BILLIE-JEAN PULLS A CRUMBLED OUT PIECE OF PAPER OUT OF HER POCKETS AND HOLDS IT UP TO CHARLOTTE.
CHARLOTTE (CONT.)
Where did you get that.
BILLIE-JEAN
Your fucking website Char. What you don't think I fucking read what you write on there?
CHARLOTTE
It's just art, it's not real Billie.
BILLIE-JEAN
(reading the paper)
Your chaos not my burden, I've let go.
To live this life of wanderlust and dreams.
The stranger I am now, you do not know.
Impending self-murder by return screams.
CHARLOTTE
Look sit down, let's talk. You've had a long flight. You're tired.
BILLIE-JEAN
(continues reading)
Find the home I never again can go?
Three clicks to an empty reproduction.
This haunted homecoming I do not know.
I consider unthinkable action.
CHARLOTTE
Look you're causing a scene.
BILLIE-JEAN
You love her don't you?
CHARLOTTE
No.
BILLIE-JEAN
That skinny, hairy-armed-pit frog with an over-bite.
CHARLOTTE
That's enough BILLIE-JEAN. Sit down. You know what I mean.
BILLIE-JEAN
Give me one reason not to walk out that door?
CHARLOTTE
Because your not ready to end our love story.
BILLIE-JEAN
Don't give me that Romeo and Juliet bullshit we both know they just die in the end.
CHARLOTTE
Look we're in Paris, it's snowing outside, let's take a walk, and I can show you around.
BILLIE-JEAN
Like an Affair to Remember? Where Terry was ran over by a car?
CHARLOTTE
Why are you so cynical? You have me- here, now!
BILLIE-JEAN
Do I?
CHARLOTTE
Yes you do!
BILLIE-JEAN
For how long?
CHARLOTTE
Forever.
BILLIE-JEAN
How can you say that, How do you know? You can't can you?
CHARLOTTE
Then for tonight, for right now, embrace what you have or...
BILLIE-JEAN
Or what?
CHARLOTTE
...or live in constant fear Billie!
BILLIE-JEAN
I tried it your way and look where it got me? I'm standing in a bar in the middle of France with snow on my face, with my girlfriend trying to convince me of another lie. I saw you kissing her through the window.
CHARLOTTE
Cupcake, look, I think you saw us kissing but what you really saw was...
BILLIE-JEAN
STOP! (pause) Loving you, I don't know what is wrong or right anymore. For the longest time I kept asking myself, what if it just gets to be too much, what if I get tired of always moving, always having to keep up with you.
CHARLOTTE
You won't.
BILLIE-JEAN
How do you know?
CHARLOTTE
Because it's me Billie, it's always been me.
BILLIE-JEAN
Save the greeting card sunshine!
(BILLIE-JEAN pauses, turns to Charlotte lovingly.)
You can't fix everyone Charlotte. Life isn't a fairy tale. We were wrong about it, there's no order to it, no happily ever-after. There's just you and me spinning out of control.
CHARLOTTE
What do you want from me?
BILLIE-JEAN
I want the life we had before you moved to this God-forsaken-place. No, you know, now- ...now, I think I'd just settle for the truth.
CHARLOTTE
You know the funny thing  is even when you're madly in love, there's those thoughts in the back of your head. The one's you never say, or at least most of us don't because they're too hurtful, too painful. We all have them, and if we can keep those thoughts from ever manifesting themselves into words, imagine what else we can keep from one another?
BILLIE-JEAN
That's enough.
CHARLOTTE
Enough? Oh come off it BILLIE-JEAN. How can we ever expect to live happily ever after if we can't face our worse fears?
BILLIE-JEAN
Stop it, I said that's enough!
CHARLOTTE
No let's do this. Let's put BILLIE-JEAN's character flaws on the table, shall we. You fly half way around the world in an attempt to either save our love or end our relationship in a way that makes you feel like you've won some imaginary war. You're too ashamed to accept the truth: that you're gullible, and you've been taken advantage of.
We're not with each other because there's really something called love. Who are we kidding?  The only reason you and I are together is because we're too damn scared to be apart. Because we both made a mistake... or one of us is using the other.
BILLIE-JEAN
I don't believe you, I don't believe any of this.
CHARLOTTE
Prove me wrong then, or walk out that door?
BILLIE-JEAN
I proved it by staying with you all this time.
CHARLOTTE
Exactly.
BILLIE-JEAN
What does that even mean?
CHARLOTTE
It means you stayed with me just to prove that you were the better than me. You knew the truth. You just wanted to write your ending with you being the victim.
BILLIE-JEAN
That's it, I'm leaving...
CHARLOTTE grabs BILLIE-JEAN's wrist.
CHARLOTTE
Let's just be clear here. I love you, I've always loved you. I fucked her, I fucked her not, but promise me this: if you walk out that door, and you write your own ending, YOU are the author of your own life.
BILLIE-JEAN stands up, kisses CHARLOTTE on both cheeks and exits through the bar door.
CHARLOTTE pulls out a cigarette and lights it.
